The Hotel Gleneagles in Torquay, which inspired the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers, is being demolished. The Gleneagles and its former owner in the s, Donald Sinclair, were the inspiration for the hotelier Basil Fawlty and Torquay's 'exotic' palm trees were the reason Cleese set the show in the resort. Speaking last year about the show, Cleese said: 'I chose Torquay when I was writing Fawlty Towers with Connie because there is something really rather exotic about Torquay, with the palm trees - the English Riviera as Basil referred to it once.
Without the hotel John Cleese would never have come up with the concept for one of Britain's most loved shows of all time. Cleese's TV comedy about a dysfunctional hotel has since become a worldwide hit. Torbay Council's development management committee previously approved the knocking down the three-star hotel and building 21 one-bed and 11 two-bedroom apartments.
Locals today said they were sorry to see the demolition of the world famous hotel. And it all started with the Gleneagles Hotel. So it is sad to see it finally demolished - it's the end of an era. Ray Johnson, 57, added: 'I'm a huge fan of Fawlty Towers and am really sad to see the old Gleneagles building go. Despite the mockery it endured in the show, the hotel continued to operate until earlier this year.
We used to enjoy looking at the Fawlty Towers memorabilia in the reception area. At the time, the Asheldon Road business was owned by Donald and Beatrice Sinclair and the Pythons were reportedly seen by Mr Sinclair as a 'colossal inconvenience' during their visit. Cleese said: 'We never shot Fawlty Towers in Torbay.

Retirement homes to replace Torquay hotel whose owner became the template for hopeless hotelier Basil Fawlty. The seaside hotel in Torquay that inspired John Cleese to create the beloved British sitcom Fawlty Towers is being demolished to make way for retirement homes. He and other members of the comedy team were booked into the hotel and were amazed at the chilly greeting they received from their hosts, Donald Sinclair and his wife, Beatrice.
The other Pythons moved to another hotel but Cleese stayed on and later used the Sinclairs as templates for Basil and Sybil Fawlty. Donald Sinclair died in and the hotel changed hands. In recent years it ran Fawlty Towers-themed events and attracted a steady stream of fans from across the world who stayed there or posed for pictures outside.
Beatrice Sinclair died in , aged The bedroom hotel closed last year and the site is being developed by Churchill Retirement Living, which has been granted permission to build 32 retirement flats on the site.
There was a sense of melancholy in and around Torquay as the demolition teams moved in.
