Emerson whyalla

Dr Emerson's reference to Whyalla follows comments from Opposition Leader Tony Abbott that the introduction of the carbon tax this month would wipe the South Australian town off the map. But the minister's appearance has come under fire, with Mr Abbott calling it "juvenile" and shadow treasurer Joe Hockey calling him a "circus clown". And in my own way I was backing the people of Whyalla. However, Dr Emerson admitted that singing was "not right up there with my other abilities".

Resources Minister Martin Ferguson defended Dr Emerson, arguing he was using music to express an honest message about tackling climate change. I've never had a desire to be a song and dance man," Mr Ferguson told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday. Emerson defends Whyalla wipeout stunt. Keep up to date with ABC Emergency.

Trade Minister Craig Emerson has brushed aside criticism of his theatrical attempt to ridicule the Opposition's campaign against the carbon tax. Dr Emerson was responding to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's previous comments that the South Australian city of Whyalla would be "wiped off the map" because of the carbon tax.

The video of his performance has gone viral, with news of his song-and-dance routine being reported around the world. His former rock star colleague, Peter Garrett, yesterday took to Twitter to politely suggest that Dr Emerson's future career lay in politics, not singing. He was initially concerned about the legal issues surrounding the use of the Skyhooks' song. Dr Emerson was assured that Symons had no problems with the parody, so long as it was not sold. With that, he performed the song for the ABC in one of the parliamentary courtyards - several times.

But it has drawn criticism from Opposition MPs, who have accused the Trade Minister of making light of the public's concerns about the effects of the carbon tax. If it is any consolation for the Trade Minister, the Opposition does see some upside from the singing and dancing routine.
